Development of customised biodegradable implants for bone reconstruction procedures – “CRANIOIMPLANTS”

The project “Development of customised biodegradable implants for bone reconstruction procedures” is carried out by scientific and industrial consortium:

The objective of the project is the development of technology and clinical validation of customised resorbable anatomical spatial structures, which will be intentionally designed medical bone implants for use in neurosurgical reconstruction of the calvaria and facial skeleton, also for the youngest paediatric patients. The suggested solution includes the introduction of implants fitted to anatomical features and made of biodegradable and resorbable polylactide (PLA) or its derivatives. This polymer is characterised by gradual biodegradation and is metabolically absorbed by the body. During implantation, PLA displays high biocompatibility features. In line with the assumptions, it is possible to modify the time of implanted material resorption so that the process of bone tissue remodelling can be performed during implant resorption. This solution will make it possible to repair the defect of/damage to the anatomical structure of the bone during the procedure and to reconstruct the anatomically correct bone structure with a simultaneous absorption of the implant itself. Our technological solutions allow spatial structures to be produced for biomedical engineering applications such as customised calvaria and facial skeleton implants made to the surgeon’s order for a specific paediatric patient, which is a product innovation at least in our country. The range of personalised prostheses will be subsequently extended by standard sizes (a maximum of 7 size groups differing, for example, in shape and dimensions).
